Happy spring, lovely reader!
It’s been a long winter, but a productive one. Not only have I been working on some tasty new recipes, but I’ve also been into some exciting new projects at work. (I’m a registered dietitian at the Physicians Committee, and I see patients at the affiliated Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC.)
Specifically, I’ve had the honor of appearing on the Physicians Committee’s exciting new Exam Room podcast. Each week, the podcast covers a hot topic in plant-based nutrition, in addition to sharing inspiring success stories.
The talented Chuck Carroll, a.k.a. the Weight Loss Champion, hosts the podcast. I’ve been honored to come on the show not once but three times to cover topics near and dear to me. So if you want to learn some surprising facts about the power of plant-based nutrition–and hear me tell my own story–I encourage you to subscribe to the podcast. And listen to the following episodes, of course!
1. Vegan Superfoods
What 12 vegan superfoods should be in your shopping cart? Find out in this episode! (Bonus: Since many of these plant-powered foods fly under the pop-culture radar, they don’t have the “superfood” markup.) You’ll also hear Olympic silver medalist Dotsie Bausch discuss her plant-based journey and the downsides of dairy.
2. The Meat-Cancer Connection
Hear me share my own near-misses with breast cancer (I still cross my fingers every time I see my breast surgeon :-/ ), the impact of meat on cancer risk, and what you can do to help protect yourself and your kids with healthy food. Of course, diet is only one piece of the puzzle—there’s no magic bullet! But it’s nice to know there are proactive steps you can take to lower your risk of breast cancer or recurrence. (Watch the video here.) Dr. Steve Neabore discusses the connection between diet and other cancers, too.
3. What Happens When You First Go Vegan
If you’ve been pondering a plant-based shift, but haven’t made your move yet, this episode is for you! Entertaining and real-world, this show gets right down to it: how being plant-based will affect your đź’©, what you can do to prevent gas, and more. You’ll also hear my colleague Maggie Neola, R.D., discuss tips for resisting the temptations of standard American diet (SAD) party food. (Watch the video here.)
4. Mama Veggie Quest’s Weight Loss Story
Mama Veggie Quest has also gone on the show! In a segment in the gut bacteria episode, my mom shares her incredible story of losing over 100 pounds on a plant-based diet—and keeping the weight off for 3 years and counting. From the show notes: “By the time she was 12 years old and standing just 5 feet tall, Connie Crosby weighed 242 pounds. With peers often cruel at that age, she describes that time in her life as traumatic… [However], finally, in her mid-60’s a whole-food, plant-based diet enabled her to live the life she always wanted to lead.” Hear her tell her story in her own words—and how she finally got rid of the weight and regained her mobility and energy, too.
I hope you all enjoy listening to these podcasts as much as we enjoyed making them! Let me know what you think in the comments below. 🙂

Listening to the Meat Cancer Connection podcast now and I have to say, I love how relaxed and inviting you sound while clearly knowing your facts. I hope to be able to speak on these subjects with as much enthusiasm and confidence as you do. I had the good fortune of hearing you at the recent Food For Life training and I am definitely a fan! 🙂

Aw, thanks Cara! Will you be at the International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine this year? If so, I hope to see you there!
